These tough trees, hardy in Zones 8-10, have over 700 species available, and most are native to Australia. Although some of these plants can reach over 200 feet tall, they can be used seasonally in many gardens and even as a houseplant.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-1\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-2\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Eucalyptus is grown for its potent essential oils, commonly derived from the\u00a0<em>E. globulus.<\/em>\u00a0These fragrant oils are used to scent perfumes and fragrances. All parts of the eucalyptus plant produce these oils, but they are most commonly derived through steam distillation of the leaves.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-3\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Eucalyptus bark, leaves, and oil are considered highly toxic to both humans<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-3\">1<\/span>\u00a0and most animals.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">2<\/span>\u00a0In fact, koala bears\u2014who dine almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves\u2014can only tolerate the leaves because of the unique microbes in their digestive tract that break down the otherwise harmful compounds. That&#8217;s when a plant releases toxins into the soil so competing plants can&#8217;t grow. There is still some uncertainty<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-5\">3<\/span>\u00a0about the level of allelopathy that eucalyptus trees have, but it&#8217;s something to consider when planting.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The cider gum (<em>E. gunnii)<\/em>, silver dollar (<em>E. cinerea<\/em>), and Alpine cider gum (<em>E. archeri<\/em>) are particularly suited for growing indoors in containers. The Hawaiian Ecosystems at Risk (HEAR) project Biological Resources Division classifies\u00a0<em>E. globulus<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>E. robusta\u00a0<\/em>as invasive for their allelopathic tendencies<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-2\">5<\/span>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><span id=\"toc-how-and-when-to-plant-eucalyptus\" class=\"heading-toc\"><\/span><h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block bhg-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">How and When to Plant Eucalyptus<\/span><\/h2><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-19\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Eucalyptus should be planted later in the spring or in the fall, depending on your\u00a0USDA Zone. Dig a hole that&#8217;s a bit larger than the tree&#8217;s root ball, and\u2014if you are planting more than one eucalyptus plant\u2014space them about 8 to 10 feet apart to give them plenty of space to grow. If you plan to grow your eucalyptus plants as annual shrubs, they will need slightly less space as they are likely to only reach 6 to 8 feet in height. If you&#8217;re planting one as a tree, be aware these are thirsty plants. Trees and plants in your yard won&#8217;t need fertilizer.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-37\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-38\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block bhg-sc-block-subheading mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Pruning<\/span><\/h3><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-39\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">There are several methods for pruning eucalyptus depending on your needs and which species you are growing.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">One method\u2014coppicing\u2014involves cutting the tree or shrub back to almost ground level occasionally to stimulate growth. This method, which is particularly effective for\u00a0<em>E. gunnii<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>E. globulus<\/em>\u00a0cultivars, keeps the foliage in the juvenile stage, encourages new stems each year, and helps manage the size of the plant. To coppice your eucalyptus, cut back all the stems (to about 6 to 12 inches from the ground) using angled cuts in late winter or early spring. In the early stages, it may take more than one season for new growth to return, but after years of regular coppicing, vibrant new growth should return each season. The cuttings from coppiced eucalyptus plants are excellent for drying or using in floral arrangements.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-42\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-43\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If you are pruning your eucalyptus to form a shrub or hedge, cut back about one-third of the plant\u2019s height at the end of its second growing season. After each subsequent growing season, you will only need to remove about a quarter of the plant\u2019s height to maintain a reasonable size and shape.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-44\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-45\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If you are growing eucalyptus as a tree, it won\u2019t need much pruning beyond the occasional removal of dead leaves and branches. You can, however, begin pruning some of the lower branches (after the tree is at least 2 years old) if you would like to create a more defined canopy when the tree reaches maturity. You can also cut eucalyptus branches from your tree to use in floral arrangements or for their aromatic properties.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-46\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-47\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">For potted eucalyptus, you can snip off unruly or overgrown ends as necessary, but avoid doing any major pruning until spring. Come spring, you can prune your plant to direct its shape and remove any dead or broken branches.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-48\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block bhg-sc-block-subheading mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Potting and Repotting Eucalyptus<\/span><\/h3><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-50\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Eucalyptus are fast growers; their roots can quickly fill a small container. Their roots are quite sensitive, so it&#8217;s best to start with a larger pot to avoid the need to transplant them later on. If you&#8217;re growing eucalyptus as a houseplant, or overwintering one, give it as much sun as possible in the home. Usually, a bright southern exposure will work best.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><span id=\"toc-pests-and-problems\" class=\"heading-toc\"><\/span><h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-52\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block bhg-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Pests and Problems<\/span><\/h2><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The\u00a0<a title=\"How to Plant and Grow Dogwood Tree\" href=\"https:\/\/ifoxany.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/20\/how-to-plant-and-grow-dogwood-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">longhorned borer beetle<\/a>\u00a0attacks eucalyptus in California. They create holes in the bark where liquid will ooze out. Unfortunately, there&#8217;s no effective pesticide for these pests, so tree management is essential to keep these insects from damaging trees. Otherwise, there are few pests or problems that can harm eucalyptus trees.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-54\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><span id=\"toc-how-to-propagate-eucalyptus\" class=\"heading-toc\"><\/span><h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-55\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block bhg-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">How to Propagate Eucalyptus<\/span><\/h2><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-56\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Propagation can be done with cuttings taken during late summer from trees between two and 12 months after planting. Cut a 5-inch branch and dip it in rooting hormone. Add the branch to a pot with growing medium. Set the pot in indirect sunlight to keep the plant at around 70\u00baF. In about a month, roots should form.<\/p><div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-57\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Planting eucalyptus from garden plants or seeds is the easiest way to grow them, but many species of eucalyptus seeds must be stratified in the refrigerator for at least two months before planting. This will simulate winter and promote germination. Toss the seeds in a plastic bag with some vermiculite, perlite, or sand and spritz the contents to moisten the mix. Date the bag and place it in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks. When you are ready to plant\u2014preferably two months before the last frost, fill a container (if growing indoors), starting tray, or growing pot with a well-draining potting mix and place the seeds on top, lightly covering them with soil.
